Most people don’t spend a lot of time wondering whether or not their priorities and their values are in sync. They just assume they are. But, if you do this exercise the results may surprise you.
1. Make a list of your values. Make List all of the values that are important to you. (Values are the things that keep you lined up with what’s most important to you.)
2. Create a smaller list of only your top 10 values. Take some time with this and really think about the things in life that are most important to you. Imagine you were living a life with everything in alignment. What values would you most like to embody?
3. Go back to your original values list where you brainstormed all of your values, but this time rank your values as they really are, right now, reflected in your life today. Look at what you’ve created in your life up to now, and let your current situation be a map of the things you have valued up to now.
Your #1 value is reflected by what you have the most of in your life, and #10 is what you have the least of.
Can you guess the purpose of creating two separate lists of your values? It’s to shed light on the gap between the values you want to align your life with and the values you’re currently aligned with. Were there some discrepancies? Great! The differences are exciting because the sooner you understand that gap, the sooner you can make progress towards the life you truly want to live. Living in alignment with our values is one of the most direct routes to deep and long-term satisfaction.
